What affects WHOOP accuracy?

There are a few things that can affect accuracy:

  1. Make sure the sensor on your WHOOP Strap is clean. A lot of WHOOP Athletes will wear their WHOOP Strap into the shower and wash with warm, soapy water at that time.
  2. Make sure the sensor is tight against the skin. If you can see green sensor light shining out while wearing your WHOOP Strap, it isn't tight enough. 
  3. If comfortable for you move the WHOOP Strap up further on the arm. Some Athletes find this a better place to capture HR.

When changing WHOOP bands it is important to ensure the band is threaded correctly. When it is threaded incorrectly, the band can loosen up very easily which may impact readings. The following video demonstrates how to thread the band properly:  


Excessive hand motion may cause the strap to move against the skin in some cases generating an artifact on the heart rate (HR) signal which sometimes makes it difficult to detect the true HR. Sometimes this may result in what looks like a false high heart rate. WHOOP has been put through rigorous quality testing and validated against typical use cases to ensure that arm movement within the expected scope of activity should not generate these results. Momentary increase in the estimated heart rate is expected when the quality of the data is poor, we take note that the data quality has dropped and the HR estimate is not as accurate. This information is taken into account when subsequent metrics are calculated. In the strain metric calculation, accelerometer data and heart rate are used.
