What is Sleep Auto-Detection?
Sleep Auto-Detection is a feature that detects when you fall asleep and when you wake up, and logs that period as Sleep. With Sleep Auto-Detection, you can track your Sleep and receive your Recovery without having to manually start/stop or add your Sleep.
WHOOP switches the overview screen from yesterday to today at 12 am (midnight) each night.
How does Sleep Auto-Detection work?
The WHOOP system looks for changes in your heart rate, heart rate variability, and activity patterns (typical of Sleep) to determine when you go to bed and when you wake up. Sleep Auto-Detection will detect any period of Sleep longer than 1 hour and log it as a Sleep or a Nap, depending on when it occurs during your day.
If you wake up and WHOOP detects a Sleep (but is waiting to make sure you're fully awake before ending it), you may see a “Process Now” entry on your Overview screen, as pictured below.
By selecting Process Now, WHOOP will know that you are not extending this Sleep and the system will begin processing your Sleep activity. Once your Heart Rate (HR) is elevated for a significant amount of time, the Sleep will process on its own.
Auto-detected Sleeps (and Naps) behave just like user-submitted sleeps.
Auto-detected Sleeps will generate: Sleep Stages, Sleep Performances, and Recoveries.
Auto-detected Naps will generate: Sleep Stages and Sleep Performances. However, regardless of input (auto or manual), Naps will not generate a Recovery.

How Sleep Auto-Detection deciphers Nightly Disturbances
For any nightly disturbances (wake-ups) lasting less than 50 minutes, Sleep Auto-Detection will continue to give you information for 1 Sleep session.
If you are awake for longer than 50 minutes, you will receive a Sleep activity and the next period sleep will be calculated as a Nap. WHOOP allows you to merge the two types into 1 sleep, if desired.
How Sleep Auto-Detection deciphers Naps
Sleep Auto-Detection will detect periods of Sleep that are between 24 minutes and 14 hours in duration (includes long Naps), regardless of when they occur. If your Nap is too short for Sleep Auto-Detection, use the Add Activity menu option to manually add it.
